The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating is used to rank the efficiency of air filters. Every air filter has holes that allow air and particles to pass through. The smaller the holes, the fewer particles that passes through. Higher MERV ratings indicate smaller holes, and therefore a more efficient filter.
Signs your home may need an air purifier
Even the cleanest homes can suffer from unhealthy air. In fact, indoor air pollutant levels can be up to 100 times higher than outdoor levels.* Airborne pollutants include anything from dust, pollen and pet dander to bacteria, mold and chemical vapors. Left unfiltered, these tiny particles can lead to health problems such as allergies, asthma and other respiratory illnesses. They can also cause damage to furniture, flooring and create unpleasant odors in your home.
If you notice any of these signs, or generally feel you can breathe easier when you’re away from home, consider installing an air purifier (also called an air cleaner or air filtration system) in your house.
What to look for in a whole-home air filtration system
The best way to clean the air in your home, and keep it clean, is with a whole-home filtration solution with a high MERV rating, which works with your heating and cooling system to distribute healthier, filtered air throughout your entire home.
Look for cleaners with MERV ratings of 10 or higher, as this indicates a more efficient filter. Healthy Climate® air cleaners feature filters with MERV 11 ratings and up. Plus, unlike some other air cleaners on the market, they don’t emit ozone – a known lung irritant. The PureAir™ Air Purification System from Lennox is engineered with a MERV 16 filter and combats all three types of indoor air pollutants (airborne particles, germs and bacteria, and chemical vapors and odors).
