Harmony III™ Zoning System
Great Solution for Large Home
July 26, 2020First of all, most of the issues with my heat pump HVAC system were attributable to design and installation issues in my large custom-built home beyond the control of Lennox. Lennox customer support was more than willing to work with me and my HVAC installer (Airtron of San Antonio) to eventually resolve longstanding issues with my new construction HVAC system. As originally designed, my three-zone/single stage heat pump system had two distinct issues: 1) airflow was very high in one-zone operation and 2) airflow was insufficient when three zones called for heating or cooling demand. While the original air-handler was variable speed, the outdoor unit and original generic zone board was not capable of controlling fan speed. After more than 2 years of working with Airtron and Lennox customer service, the Lennox representative offered to have Airton replace the zone board with a Harmony III zoning system which offers fan speed control, as well as control of the heat pump staging (the single-stage heat pump was replaced with an upgraded two-stage unit as part of the solution). Now, when one zone is operating, the airflow is reduced sufficiently to eliminate the "hurricane" which always occurred in one-zone operation. Also, now the HVAC system is capable of heating or cooling the entire house in three-zone operation, whereas before it might take literally all day to move the house from 60F to 72F after returning from being away for a few days. The same is now true of cooling - in less than an hour the entire house can be moved several degrees. My prior HVAC control system had convinced me that zoning in a residential application was not viable. After replacing the generic zone control system with a Harmony III, I'm a believer in zoned systems for larger homes. While a little more complex in some aspects, it is certainly far less expensive than three separate smaller HVAC systems and less costly to maintain over the life of the system. I'm a well-satisfied customer, both with Lennox products and with their customer service. Lennox went the extra mile, working with my house contractor and Airtron to fix an unsatisfactory and ineffectual HVAC system. Kudos to Lennox and Airtron for putting up with me and persevering to a great solution!!

Reduces electric bill, but not very reliable
February 23, 2020Our Harmony II controller was a part of a Lennox system with 3 zones, 19 SEER 2-stage compressor, and variable speed finance. The Harmony II failed after 5-6 years and was replaced under warranty with a Harmony III. The system worked well for a few more years and probably saved us 30%-50% on summer electric bills. (No exaggeration here!) However, we then started having problems with dampers sticking open or closed. Finally got that resolved by replacing dampers and damper motors. But we are now are having intermittent problems with the Harmony III controller responding to the t-stats when they're calling for heat. Recycling the 120VAC power usually gets things working again. Anyway, we plan to go back to simple single-zone system and be done with the controller and dampers -- accidents just waiting to happen.
